Fireworks near Garland, TX

Garland is a big city, and it's a long one, stretching from the LBJ Freeway side out to the west shore of Lake Ray Hubbard. That means the drive to us depends a lot on which part of Garland you call home. South Garland has I-30 right there. Downtown and north Garland have a choice of roads.

Garland's fireworks ban is also broad. It covers simply having fireworks in the city, not just lighting them. Here is how to get here and what to know before you buy.

Driving from Garland

Plan on about 40 minutes from downtown Garland, a little under 30 miles. One route takes Avenue D, which turns into TX 66 and Lakeview Parkway, east across Lake Ray Hubbard into Rockwall. Turn south on SH 205 (Goliad Street) to I-30, then go east about 13 miles past Fate and Royse City. If you live in south Garland, it is usually simpler to get on I-30 east near you and stay on it, crossing the lake on the interstate.

Either way, take Exit 83 for FM 1565 and follow the frontage road to 5159 I-30. Map and directions are on /visit/.

Garland fireworks rules

Banned inside city limits

Garland Code Sec. 26.14 makes it unlawful to transport, sell, possess, store, use, discharge or ignite fireworks within the city limits, except under a valid display permit or when transported through the city by a licensed carrier. It also bars adults from helping minors use fireworks and property owners from allowing violations. The code sets fines that rise with repeat convictions; a 2019 city notice said fines of up to $500.

Garland bans fireworks under Section 26.14 of the city code, titled Fireworks prohibited. It is unlawful to transport, sell, offer, receive, possess, keep, store, use, discharge, explode or ignite fireworks within the city limits. The exceptions are fireworks covered by a valid display permit and fireworks moved through the city by a licensed carrier. The section also makes it an offense for an adult to help someone under 18 use fireworks, or for a property owner to allow a violation on their property. The code sets fines that go up with repeat convictions, and a city police notice has warned of fines up to $500.

Because possession counts, think about how you will carry your order home and where it will be stored. Garland is mostly in Dallas County. See /texas-fireworks-laws/dallas/ and the statewide rules at /texas-fireworks-laws/.

Where you can legally shoot

There is no legal place to shoot inside Garland. The general rule is private land outside every city's limits and buffer zones, with the owner's permission, when the county has no drought order or burn ban. Garland borders other cities on most sides, and those cities have their own rules, so the nearest legal land is a drive. Wherever you go, check that city's and county's rules too. Lake Ray Hubbard and public parks are not legal places to shoot.

The easy option is Garland's own show. Red, White & You on the Downtown Garland Square has ended with fireworks set to a live score by the Garland Symphony Orchestra.
