Kaufman County fireworks rules

Kaufman County lies south of Rockwall and Hunt counties along US 80 and US 175. The county seat is Kaufman, and the Kaufman County Fire Marshal's Office is at 101 N. Houston Street in Kaufman.

The county fire marshal's fireworks page puts it plainly: many cities and towns have ordinances that prohibit or restrict fireworks inside city limits, and cities can enforce fireworks ordinances up to 5,000 feet beyond their limits. Forney is one example. Its adopted fire code says the possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling and use of fireworks are prohibited, except approved displays. If you live in Terrell, Kaufman, Crandall, Mesquite or another city, check that city's code of ordinances or call its police non-emergency line. We have not verified every city.

In unincorporated Kaufman County, the fire marshal says that generally, if outdoor burning is allowed, fireworks are also allowed. The automated outdoor burning line, 469-595-8899, gives the current burn status. The fire marshal's page also shows a banner when a burn ban is on or lifted. The office can be reached at 469-376-4122 or firemarshal@kaufmancounty.net.

The county page also repeats state rules: no fireworks within 600 feet of a church, hospital, asylum, licensed child care center, school or college campus, none within 100 feet of fuel storage or sales, and none in or from a vehicle. It notes that law enforcement cannot enforce HOA rules, so take HOA questions to your HOA.

The statewide seasons apply in Kaufman County. County-option seasons such as Memorial Day or Diwali apply only if the Kaufman County Commissioners' Court adopts an order. We have not confirmed a current order, so check the court's posted agendas or ask the fire marshal. In a drought, the court can restrict skyrockets with sticks and missiles with fins in unincorporated areas.

If you are planning a public show rather than a backyard celebration, the county says all public fireworks displays in unincorporated areas need a permit from the fire marshal's office, with plans submitted with the application.
